FAQ
The questions you've been asking.
Plain answers, same as everything else here.
Before you start
What if I don't have a website yet?
Then you're in the right place, and the survey is built for it. The survey questions help Kirrby Studio figure out what you are looking for in a site. You bypass the report, and you go straight to the mock instead.
About a week later there's a real page at a Kirrby address, drawn from what you told me about the business, and you can click around it and show it to somebody.
You lose nothing by starting from scratch. The mock was never built from the old site anyway. It's built from what you say you want.
See both tracks, step by stepDo I have to get on a call?
Not to get the report, not to see the mock, not to buy. There's one conversation, about ninety minutes, and it comes after you've decided. If you prefer to connect before then, send me an email instead.
What that conversation coversWhat's actually in the free report?
Two things. First a read-back of what's on your public pages, so you can see it really was your site I looked at. Then the part worth your time: an honest measurement of how findable you are, in search and to the AI assistants people ask instead of searching. Where something needs doing, it says so in a sentence you can act on.
I read the public pages the way any visitor's browser would. No logins, no signing in, nothing changed on your side. If you walk away after reading it, there's nothing to undo.
It's my own way of measuring, not an industry certificate, and it's version one. It says so on the front. I'm still working out the kinks, so if a line in yours looks wrong, tell me and I'll go and look.
It arrives three ways: readable in your account, a link you can share with nobody having to sign in, and a download.
How the read worksPrice and commitment
Why are there only five founder seats?
Because I'd rather look after a small number of businesses properly than a long list badly. Five on each plan is what I can genuinely keep my eyes on while the studio is new, and the studio is new.
The founder price is the price with a code, and the code is how a seat is opened.
There's no countdown and no timer running on this page. When the seats on a plan are held, the founder price is simply gone from that plan. Nothing else about the plan changes, and nobody who already has a seat is affected by the seats running out.
The plans, the prices, and the seats still openWhat is the code, and where do I put it?
A code is how a founder seat is opened. I hand it out in the communities and places I post in, rather than printing it on the site, so the founder price goes to the people I actually meet.
If you have one, enter it under the plans on the pricing page, or in the last question of the survey. Every price on the pricing page changes to the founder price, and the code is remembered on your browser so you do not have to type it again.
Enter your code under the plansIs the founder price really for life?
For as long as you stay, yes. Not held for a year and then reviewed.
Founders also get 25% off anything the studio releases later.
The honest version of “for life” is “for as long as you're with Kirrby Studio.” If you leave while on the founder price, the locked-in price and discount end when you go, including when a plan ends after missed payments, and they do not come back with you.
Can I move to a different plan later?
While founder seats are open, yes, whenever you like. Move to any plan that still has a seat. You pay the build difference to get its extra tools set up, and move to its monthly price. No penalty, no starting over.
Once a plan's seats are gone, moving is a conversation instead of a switch. Ask me and I'll work it out.
The three plans, side by sideWhen do I actually start paying?
When the site goes live, or when the thirty-day build window ends, counted from the day you pay the build fee, whichever comes first. Never during the survey. If your site is up in fifteen days, that's when your first month starts. If the build isn't finished by day thirty because of me, the monthly fee waits until it is; if it's waiting on you, it starts on day thirty anyway.
Every plan is a build fee and a monthly plan together, and both numbers are on the same page as each other.
See the plans and pricesCan I get my money back?
The build fee is refundable in full for fifteen days from the day you pay it, and not after that; checkout says so too. If you take the refund, the build stops, the plan never starts, and the work done so far stays with me.
Can my monthly price change?
Not if you're on a founder price. That never goes up, for as long as you stay.
If you're not on a founder price, I'll email you at least five business days, and no more than thirty, before a new price applies. You can leave at any time, and if you leave within fourteen days after your first payment at the new price, I refund the part of that month you didn't use.
Why does a plan come with every build?
Because the plan is the part that's actually the work. A site nobody looks after goes quietly wrong, and then it's your job again. Selling you a build and walking away would be selling you the easy half. However, if you prefer to only commit to the build, reach out and I'll talk it through with you.
Why not just stay with my current provider?
If you're on a site builder, you already have somewhere to log in and change things yourself. That's real, and for some people it's genuinely enough.
The difference is the maintenance stays yours forever, and you're paying every month for the privilege of doing it. Here, Kirrby Studio removes some of the burden from you so you can focus on other areas of your business.
Living with the site
Can I update the site myself?
Yes, and it comes with every plan, not just the bigger ones. Your hours, your phone number, your address, your prices, swapping a photo, the words on a page: you change them, and they're live the moment you save. Your numbers sit in the same place, and so do two generators, one for images and one for copy. During the conversation, I go through what is important to you to update, and customize that experience for you.
What stays with me is anything structural. The layout, which pages exist, how the thing is put together. That's deliberate, and it's the point of the plan. There is nothing in there for you to break.
If you'd rather not touch any of it, you never have to. The bigger work is what your sit-down is for, and anything broken, or wrong in something I made, I fix once I find it or you tell me, and I tell you when to expect it. If it broke because of a change you made, or one of your own services changed, I still look and tell you what I find, but fixing it may be work outside your plan.
How often the sit-down comes round on each planWhat can the image and copy generators actually do?
They sit in your back end next to your content. The image one makes a picture for a page when you don't have the right photo and don't fancy staging one. The copy one writes the words for a page, and it writes them to be found: for search, and for the AI assistants people ask instead of searching.
Both are on every plan. They're tools, not a reason to pay more. Making a draft or an image costs something every time, so how much they make each month is set for your plan and stored with your plan schedule when you accept. It can't be reduced while you're on the plan unless you agree.
The rest of the small printWhat's a seasonal change, and how is it different from a sit-down?
A seasonal change is the big one, and it comes with every plan: the site gets properly dressed for one of your busy times (wording, calls to action, images) and then goes back to exactly how it was when the season ends. You pick the dates at the start, because your Christmas might be somebody else's Easter. Steady gets two a year, Care and Growth get four.
Important: A season is a redesign that reverts. Anything you want to keep is what the sit-down is for. During the conversation, I will identify the days upfront so they're planned for properly.
A sit-down is the proper working session. You bring everything you've been saving up since the last one, because the business has moved, and I work through it with you. Copy written, images made, design done, not a text swap. Once a year on Steady, every quarter on Care, every month on Growth. Phone, video or email, whichever suits you.
Not everybody uses every one, and that's fine. What you're buying is the safety net of not having to do it yourself.
How many changes do I get while the site is being built?
Up to three major revisions. A major revision changes how the site works: which pages there are, how it's laid out, where the menu lives. Once that's settled, swapping words and pictures is just finishing, and it isn't counted. I confirm each major revision by email as it's used, so the count is never in doubt.
The build takes up to thirty days from your payment, with a check-in about once a week. If I'm waiting on you for sixty days, I email once more, and if there's still no reply the build closes. Starting again is a new build fee at the price then current.
Who pays for my booking tool, calendar or CRM?
You do. They're your accounts and they stay yours. I connect them to the site and keep my side of that connection working.
What if something I connected stops working?
Tell me and I'll look, whichever side it turns out to be. If it's their service that's down, that part is theirs to fix. It's your account with them and I can't sign in on your behalf, but I'll tell you what I'm seeing so you're not guessing. If it's the connection to your site that broke, that's mine, and I'll sort it.
How quickly do you respond?
I make every effort to be available Monday to Friday, excluding US federal holidays, and when I know I'll be away I tell you before it starts. Looking at something and finishing it aren't the same thing, and I'll tell you which one you're getting.
What if I need something bigger than the plan?
I price it and tell you before any work starts. Nothing is ever added to your bill without you agreeing to it first.
Where the line sits
What doesn't Kirrby Studio handle?
Worth knowing before you pick a plan, so here it is plainly.
Inventory and day-to-day operations. Kirrby Studio doesn't track your stock or run your business systems. Those stay in the tools you already use for them. Connecting them to the site is the part that's mine.
Running the platforms you bring. I do need access to connect your domain and your integrations. Operating those accounts is a different thing, and they stay yours, in your name.
Applications. Kirrby Studio designs websites. If what you want is an application, that's a different conversation, and I'll say so rather than quietly building you something half right.
Seasonal work that stays. A season dresses the site and then puts it back. New work that sticks is what the sit-down is for.
Anything on your bill you didn't agree to. If you want something a plan doesn't cover, I price it and tell you first.
The full version, with the plans next to itWhat happens if I leave?
You leave from your account, online, in one press, with no call and no email. It takes effect at once: your plan ends and no more monthly payments are taken. Nothing is owed for leaving.
You take your site and everything on it: the files and design, your words and images including the generated ones, everything saved in your back end, and a copy of your data such as form messages. They come to you on or before the site's last day, or within seven days of leaving if that's sooner. The domain was always in your name.
Files aren't a running website, so you'll need hosting of your own and someone technical to set them up. Hosting it and keeping it right are what the monthly plan pays for, so those stop when the plan stops, along with your back end, the AI tools and the studio's apps. You can have the site stay up for one more month while you move it, and you pay for that month when you choose it.
What stays with me is the system underneath and the reusable pieces it was built from, the parts that were never about your business. Any of those built into your site's files, you may keep using, free, for good.
What happens to my files after I leave?
I keep them for twelve months as a courtesy, in case you want a copy or come back, then email you, and delete them thirty days later unless you ask for them. You can ask me to delete sooner, or for a copy, at any time.
What if I miss a payment?
Your site stays up for a month while it gets sorted, no drama. Still unpaid after that, and the site shows a plain page saying it's temporarily unavailable, nothing more. A further month unpaid and the plan ends, and I send you everything, files included, without you needing to ask.
Your files are never held back to make you pay. There are no late fees and no interest. When a plan ends I keep your files for twelve months, and you're welcome back while I still hold them: pay the months you missed and the site goes back up.
What if my data is exposed?
I tell you as soon as I know, with what happened and what I'm doing about it, and I give you what you need to tell your own customers. Information your site collects from your visitors is yours; I use it only to run your site, and I never sell it.
Who's responsible for what's on my site?
You are: your words, your images, your prices, and anything drafted with the copy or image generators that you approve for publication. The generators can be wrong, and can make something close to material made for someone else, so check what they make before it goes live. Approving it, or publishing it yourself, is how the responsibility passes to you.
One more thing
Can you make me something that isn't on the list?
You made it this far, so here's the straight answer: often, yes. Some of it sits inside a plan and some of it doesn't. The things that cost something every time they're made carry limits, and those limits are written down and said up front rather than discovered later.
If there's something specific you want, say so in the survey. I'll tell you what it takes before any of it starts.
Still have a question?
Nothing here answering the question you actually came with? Put it in the survey. It takes about four minutes.
